Turning the lights off as you leave a room saves on electricity, but how about saving money on electricity while the lights are on. Halogen bulbs use 30 percent less electricity than traditional incandescent light bulbs and last much longer.
Incandescent light bulbs are soon to be banned in the UK due to the excess electrical energy they use. Up until now energy saving light bulbs have looked dull and have taken time to come up to brightness at switch on and are not dimmable, these are in the form of compact fluorescent bulbs.
The new halogen light bulbs are excellent as they have the same appearance as the current incandescent bulbs, produce the same light levels, are dimmable and save 30 percent of electricity over the incandescent type.
LED Light bulbs are another consideration on a replacement energy saving bulb, they use very little electricity but are a very different colour (almost a clinical white light or blue) as opposed to the Halogen & incandescent bulbs giving off a warm light. When buying LED bulbs be careful on the type the cheaper ones do not give off much light at all. Expect to pay around £12.00 for a good replacement LED Bulb.
Through our experience as Electricians at Earth Electrical we know that great care needs to be taken when selecting types of bulbs (light fittings) for different room environments. See below example of what can go wrong if the lighting is incorrectly selected for the environment.
We are always getting calls & emails from people saying that they think there is a problem with their lights in the kitchen.
When visiting the property on a call out we find that someone has fitted 230V down lights to a kitchen. The issue here is that GU10 light bulbs are very vulnerable when hot and if switched back on while hot, the spike of electricity at switch on can blow the light bulb.
There are soft start light switches available on the market, that take away the electrical spike at switch on (prolonging the life of the bulb). The other solution is never fit 230V down lights in areas where the lights are frequently switched on. 12V down lights are the best light to use within kitchens and other frequently switched areas as 12V down lights come with a Transformer that has a soft start function within them.
