In January, all EV (Electric Vehicle) charging units are having a new component fitted to meet the 1st January 2019 BS7671 British Standards. This update will affect all installers and manufacturers of EV charging equipment and as such the prices of the Rolec units will be changing to that which is shown below.
This update is to take into account DC (Direct Current) leakage from EVís into your fuse board (consumer unit). It is believed that if a car has a DC leakage of greater than 10mA, it may cause some household RCD's (Residual Current Device) not to operate under fault condition. As a result all the units are being updated to detect and prevent this leakage causing an issue.
Some manufacturers of electric vehicle charging equipment will not be updating their units, instead it will be down to the installer to fit a DC Leakage device at the source end. These RCD's that detect DC leakage cost around £200-£300. Therefore because the Rolec solution incorporates DC detection in the unit, it is a much more cost effective option for the EV driver.
There are 6 Rolec approved Charge points for the OLEV grant.
16Amp or 32Amp
I would always suggest 32Amps (to future proof).
If you go for a tethered type charger (cable attached to the unit):
Advantage: Just uncoil and plug in.
Disadvantage: Not all electric and hybrid cars have the same plugs or sockets
If you go for the socket type charger:
Advantages: looks better on wall, all electric and hybrid cars can use
Disadvantages: getting lead from boot each time you charge, when its rained (putting wet lead in boot). It does not come with a lead (known as a public charging lead).
There are 2 types of (sockets/plugs) on hybrid cars/electric cars, of which your car will be one of. TYPE1 & TYPE2
As a rule of thumb, all cars from Japan are TYPE1 and most European and American cars are TYPE2
TYPE 1 is a round plug and socket
TYPE 2 is a D shape plug and socket
